Spring at LBJ State and National Parks: Texas Wildflowers, Wildlife & Historic Sites

Last week, I returned to one of my favorite Texas getaways—Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site. It shares a close connection with the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Texas heritage and presidential history. Nestled in the Hill Country, these parks holds a special place in my heart. And over the past decade I’ve made several day trips here during the spring, camera in hand, eager to capture the color and life that blooms across its meadows.

On the state park side, you’ll find a welcoming visitor center, pastures home to the official Texas State Longhorn Herd and the Texas State Bison Herd, and the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm. Here, park staff dressed in period clothing and tend to cows, sheep, chickens, and traditional crops, giving visitors a hands-on look at early 1900s German-Texas farm life. A peaceful one-mile nature trail winds through woods, passing by a longhorn pasture and ending near the bison enclosure.

Just across the Pedernales River lies the LBJ Ranch, part of the National Historical Park. The ranch includes the Texas White House, the president’s birthplace, his first school, the Johnson family cemetery, and even a JetStar presidential airplane. A self-guided driving tour winds through the grounds and concludes at the Show Barn, home to a herd of adorable Hereford cattle (yes, cows can be cute!).

During my most recent visit, I was struck by a familiar feeling—this time of year always draws me back. Spring brings a burst of wildflowers and new life among the animals, making it the perfect season for photography. I’ve gathered some of my favorite images from over the years, capturing the quiet charm and seasonal beauty of this special place.
